Training on MARPOL Annex VI (Scrubber Systems) for the Jordanian maritime administration

SAFEMED V

A training course on MARPOL Annex VI was conducted from 19 to 21 November in a synchronous online modality and aimed at providing the necessary knowledge and skills to the staff of the maritime administration carrying out supervisory activities relating to Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention and scrubber systems, in particular.

The course explained to the participants the overarching principles, regulations, and measures of environmental protection, the role of the MARPOL convention and specifically its Annex VI. Topics pertaining to emission abatement methods such as scrubber system types and their operational limitations, as well as State supervision-related survey and certification requirements and guidance for fuel sampling were discussed in detail.

With the designation of the Mediterranean Sea as an Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides, the issue of reducing and monitoring air pollution originating from shipping has become one of increased importance and interest for the SAFEMED beneficiaries, especially those who have already ratified the 1997 MARPOL Protocol pertaining to its Annex VI. Accordingly, the topic is also central to the Project’s environmental agenda.
