Using internationally recognised ISO Standards, EMSA has developed an Integrated Quality & Environmental Management System (IQEMS) as a framework to achieve quality deliverables, environmental protection and a sustainable continual improvement of our activities based on the following core principles:

• • full compliance with EU and Portuguese legal requirements, laws, rules and regulations applicable to the Agency;
  • customer focus - meeting customer requirements and striving to exceed their expectations;
  • environmental protection – minimising the environmental impact of our activities and work together with local communities for improving the social and environmental conditions;
  • leadership – leaders at all levels should establish unity of purpose and direction, and create conditions in which people are engaged in achieving the Agency’s quality objectives;
  • engagement of people - competent, empowered and engaged people at all levels throughout the Agency are essential to enhance its ability to create and deliver value;
  • process approach - consistent, predictable results are achieved more effectively and efficiently when activities are understood and managed as interrelated processes that function as a coherent system;
  • evidence-based decision making - decisions are based on the analysis and evaluation of data and information;
  • relationship management - for sustained success, the Agency engage in and manage relationships with interested parties;
  • sustainable development and corporate social responsibility – Agency activities aims to have a positive influence on the local society, the European maritime safety, security and marine environment, and generally to the world’s maritime domain.

EMSA IQEMS translates these principles into practical processes focusing on the quality of our deliverables and minimising the environmental impact of our activities. Consistent and predictable results are achieved more effectively and efficiently when activities are understood and managed as interrelated processes that function as a coherent system.
