EMSA Study of two hazardous substances (PFOS and HBCDD) included in the annexes of regulation (EU) 1257/2013 on ship recycling
Date
EMSA’s study on the two hazardous substances (PFOS and HBCDD) included in the annexes of regulation (EU) 1257/2013 on ship recycling, is now published and available on the website. In addition to the 13 substances stated in the Hong Kong Convention for safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships, two substances have been added in the EU SRR, namely perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and the brominated flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD).
The hazardous substances study developed in close cooperation with DNV-GL to close knowledge gaps regarding properties and use of PFOS and HBCDD. It demonstrates that the two hazardous substances PFOS and HBCDD can be found on board ships and rigs and provides further insight for the current regulation, updated material lists, sampling, handling and analysis of these substances.
